Alfa Romeo Milano Leaked photos from production

Alfa Romeo's 147 successor, dubbed Milano, is currently under development. Recently, spy shooters caught up with a Milano prototype undergoing winter testing in Europe. Unfortunately, this five-door Milano test mule is wearing a significant amount of camouflage, effectively hiding many of the styling nuances both front and rear.

The Milano can be confirmed as a compact C-segment five-door hatchback by these images. Based on the same platform as extended family members Fiat Bravo and Lancia Delta, a host of T-jet gasoline engines and Multijet diesel engines should provide power to the new Alfa Milano. The standard Milano will be front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive will be available optionally. Expect a 265-hp GTA model to follow the Milano's introduction.

Best guesses have the Alfa Romeo Milano pegged for a Frankfurt debut this September. Of course, it will be quite a while longer before the production Milano shows up Stateside - if it does at all. Earliest predictions have new Alfa Romeo models arriving in the U.S in 2011 or 2012, assuming the proposed Chrysler/Fiat partnership becomes a reality.

Alfa Romeo Viper? Is it true?

With the epic Fiat/Chrysler deal being completed many auto commentators are predicting which Fiat/Alfa models would be rebadged as Chrysler products for the American market. Over in Europe it's reversed with U.K. website Autocar reporting that Fiat is considering bringing in Dodge models to Europe to be rebadged at Alfa Romeos. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is said to be pondering the move, saying that the two brands share the same core identity.

Autocar quotes Marchionne as saying that Dodge is the muscle car of the U.S. while Alfa is apparently the muscle car of Europe. If the right Dodge-branded products were to get to Europe, the theory is that they could actually compliment the products already offered by Alfa. The obvious problem is that there are very few Dodge models that could possibly perform well in Europe. The only models that are of any real interest are the Charger, Viper and Challenger, and there is a fair chance that the Viper could be chopped off and sold anyway. The Charger and Challenger are probably too big and brash for Europe as and would probably only sell in small niche numbers. It's improbable but possible that the Viper coould see an Alfa Romeo badge stamped on it's bulbous hood... or bonnet.

Alfa Romeo Milano New 147 Hatchback

Alfa Romeo is putting the finishing touches to its new Milano hatchback – the replacement to the cutesy 147. Bosses are still weighing up whether to launch the car at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show or the 2010 Geneva expo. Why the rethink? Because waiting six months can save millions in tooling-up costs from this year's recession-hit balance sheets.

Revealed here in CAR's artist's impression, the new Milano will be available as a five-door hatchback only. And our sources say it'll appear as a bigger five-door hatch: lower and wider than today's model, although the tape measure will confirm it as a rival to the VW Golf brigade.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider 2009

A drop-top version of the gorgeous 8C Competizione coupe, the Spider was seen at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California in 2005. The two-seat 8C coupe made its debut, albeit in concept form, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003. Early this year, Alfa Romeo announced the production version of the 8C Spider will be officially released at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The 8C Spider, like its coupe sibling, is planned to be built in a limited number of 500 cars.

The engine powering both coupe and convertible is from another Italian thoroughbred, Maserati's Quattroporte, although it's been enlarged to 4.7 liters of displacement. It makes 450 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 347 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm, with a 7,500 rpm redline. The Ferrari-built motivator will be placed behind the front axle for a low center of gravity and ideal 50/50 weight distribution.

The sole transmission choice will be a six-speed sequential manual with paddles, mounted as part of the rear axle for better weight distribution, as is the current vogue. The Q-Select gearbox will have five distinct modes: Manual-Normal; Manual-Sport; Automatic-Normal; Automatic-Sport and Ice.

The car's carbon-fibre body hides a steel unibody close to that of the Maserati coupe as well. The underbody was shaped in the wind-tunnel to reduce lift at the high speeds the car will no doubt be able to achieve without so much as breaking a sweat.

A high-threshold stability control system is on the cards as well, working with the double-wishbone suspension to keep the car on the road.

Tires are to be 20-inch versions of Pirelli's P-Zero Corsa, with six-piston, cross-drilled and vented brakes up front and four-piston rear brakes testing their traction abilities.

The car shares its name with the Alfa Romeo 8C 2009 from 1934, which dominated the 1000 Miglia race in 1935-1938 and 1947. It was powered by an inline-8 engine.

The French build a MINI – Alfa Romeo Chatenet CH26

Apparently, the French have decided to give tough competition to Chinese automakers ripping of vehicle designs. Their answer is the Chatenet CH26 that regally rips both Alfa Romeo Mito and MINI. The two seat, 3065mm long car is powered by a 523cc two-cylinder diesel engine that generates 5.4 hp, and it claims to weigh just 769 pounds. Top speed for the Chatenet is 28mph and it promises a fuel efficiency of 75mpg. It costs $19,000. All this car actually does is make the Chinese rip-offs sound better.
