VW Unveils Polo 3-Door

Volkswagen has released details about the new Polo three-door, ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Featuring sporty styling and three different trim levels, the Polo was designed to combine beauty and efficiency. Base Trendline models boast standard ESP, daytime running lights, electric front windows, central locking, and tinted windows. Moving up to the Comfortline adds body-colored exterior accents, chrome trim, air conditioning, faux aluminum interior details, and a split folding rear seat. At the top of the range, there is a Highline model which features additional chrome trim, 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, a multi-function display, and height-adjustable sport seats.

At launch, the Polo will be offered with three diesel and three petrol engines. The petrol engines will have outputs of 44 kW (60 PS), 51 kW (70 PS), and 63 kW (85 PS) while the diesels will be rated at 55 kW (75 PS), 66 kW (90 PS) and 77 kW (105 PS). Future engines include a 77 kW (105 PS) TSI petrol and a 1.2-liter TDI which consumes just 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 km (for the Polo BlueMotion). For the first time, VW's seven-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic transmission will be available as an option.

The Polo three-door will be launched this fall, with prices starting at €12,150 (in Germany).

VW New Sportline Limited Edition X Model

Cargo and passenger-hauling large vans are hardly synonymous with sportiness, that’s not stopping Volkswagen from introducing for the United Kingdom market a performance-oriented, limited edition Transporter Sportline Edition X.

Packing 18-inch alloy wheels, unique chrome exterior add-ons, front and rear spoilers and more, the Transporter Sportline Edition X will be limited to just 150 units.

Inside, the van gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, unique black and blue leather sports seats and embroidered floor mats – all the better suited to sporty mobility, apparently.

The van doesn’t include any additional underhood go – the 174-horsepower 2.5-liter TDI engine remains. The package adds £500 to make the base short-wheelbase version start at £25,065. Add another £500 or so for the long-wheelbase variant and another £1,300 on top of that for the passenger-cargo combi.

Volkswagen New Polo Car

This is the fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo, which features styling inspired by the new Scirocco and Mk6 Golf, and super-frugal petrol and diesel engines capable of 74mpg and 96g/km of CO2.

Unveiled in Geneva tonight, the new Polo is roomier and more sporty than the current model. The new car is based on the same platform as the new Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia. That shifts it up in size; at 3952mm and 1682mm, it's 36mm longer and 32mm wider than the outgoing version.

The standout styling feature is VW’s new front-end look, centred on a full-width lower grille and a narrower upper opening. Together, they widen the Polo's stance.

New VW Golf GTI VI 210 HP

In November Volkswagen unveiled a thinly disguised 'concept' of the next-generation version of the Golf GTI, one of the most acclaimed hot hatches on the market. New shots released today show the concept car was in fact a doppelganger for the production model, right down to the fog lights and the license plate holder.

As expected, the Mark VI GTI's styling remains similar to the previous model and is differentiated mostly by a new front bumper design. The last generation was purchased by 1.7 million people and it’s expected that this new model will do just as well. With both three and five-door models, it will appeal to a wide range of buyers looking for a sportier-than-average euro hatch.

The Mark VI Golf platform is the basis for the GTI update and, like its more mundane companions, the GTI is an evolutionary step forward, not overly different to its predecessor. The Mark VI model retains a 2.0L turbo engine but now develops 210hp (155kW), which is just 10hp (7kW) more than the outgoing model. Top speed is limited to 148mph (239km/h) and VW claims the car will hit the 62mph (100km/h) benchmark in 7.2 seconds.

The engine performance has been tuned to ensure torque throughout the rev range, with the GTI developing 206lb-ft (280Nm) as early as 1,800pm. The low-end grunt also helps the car achieve an average fuel economy of only 31.6mpg (7.5L/100km), according to EU tests.

Rather than adding lots power to their hot hatches, like most car companies do, VW has concentrated on improving the dynamics of the new GTI with a new sports suspension, DCC adaptive damping and an XDS electronic differential. Drive will be sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or optional six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Although VW is yet to reveal full details about the car, earlier spy shots have suggested the new GTI will get a set of performance brakes, potentially from famed brake company Brembo. Other exterior appointments are expected to include standard 18in alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights. More details should be released closer to the car's launch at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

Wings to VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI

The Scirocco is based on VW Golf underpinnings but its striking looks set it apart from the popular hatchback. It certainly stands out from the crowd, with a distinctive front end and wide rear that provides a purposeful and sporty stance. Technically it’s a three-door hatchback rather than a coupe, but from the outside at least, it justifies the sporty nametag.

Interior/Practicality

Sadly, the VW’s cabin fails to live up to the stylish standards set by the rakish exterior The Eos-inspired dashboard is smart and well built but we would like a few more unique touches to set the newcomer apart from its stablemates. And while it bears a close relationship to the Golf underneath, you don’t get as much rear space. The rear bench of the family car has given way to a pair of less flexible individual rear seats and the 292-litre boot has a restricted opening compared to the Golf.

Engine/Performance

You’ll struggle to pick a bad engine from the three available in the Scirocco. The firm’s clever 158bhp 1.4 TSI petrol is the entry-level unit but if you want more power the excellent 2.0-litre TSI from the Golf GTI is also available. It delivers strong torque and powers the coupe from 0-62mph in 7.2seconds, yet provides combined fuel consumption of 37.2mpg. If economy is the main priority there’s always VW’s direct injection 2.0TDI. Its available in 138bhp guise and can return 55.4mpg at the pumps.
