Audi teases New A5 Sportback

Though it’s not expected to come to North America, Audi is nonetheless attempting to generate some excitement here about its upcoming A5 Sportback five-door “coupe” by releasing a pair of teasers. The A5 Sportback — which was previewed in an officially sketch from Audi — will join the growing segment of four-door coupes.

The Sportback will proceed with Audi’s aim to differentiate the A5 into a separate model family. Obviously, the A5 Sportback will not remain a two-door as the coupe, but rather a five-door configuration. However, in order to be distinguished form the A4 Avant, the car proposes a more sleek design turning it into a smaller brother of the A7 four-door coupe. Audi says that the A5 Sportback will come with a 2.0-liter TDI, a 2.7-liter TDI and a 3.0-liter TDI V6, as well as two gasoline variants, a 2.0-liter TFSI and a 3.2-liter V6, although the most sporty version will be the RS 5, which is expected to debut 12 to 18 months after the initial launch.

Audi’s plan to catch sales and production up to BMW and Mercedes-Benz consists of enlarging the product range with 18 new models. That move will help the company reach one million vehicles sales in 2010, with a specific emphasis on niche vehicles like the A5 Sportback. The A5 Sportback will be positioned right below the future A7.
